The Dye Studio
At Hael, we grow a vibrant palette of dye plants that celebrate the colours of the seasons. From seed to colour, our process is rooted in sustainability, craft, and connection to the land. Ffion uses these homegrown plants to create naturally dyed textiles, offer hands-on workshops, and develop creative kits for slow, mindful making. Whether you're looking to explore natural colour through one of our workshops, shop hand-dyed pieces, or discover the beauty of plant-based pigments, this space is where nature and creativity meet.
Workshops
Join Ffion in Penbrokeshire or beyond for hands-on workshops exploring natural dyes, traditional techniques, and creative connection to the land.
Colours
Our palette is created entirely from homegrown and foraged dye plants, changing with the rhythms of the seasons.

Workshops
As part of Hael Natural Colour, artist Ffion Taverner has been offering workshops and educational programmes to teach as many people as possible about the world of natural colour.
Workshops can vary in size, location and subject matter. We offer workshops to all, from delving into the world of natural colour for the first time, to more experienced craftspeople.
We have worked in schools, with local community groups and as part of private functions.
We also offer consultation of both dye projects and any work with growing or farming plants for colour.

Grands Teints (Great Dyes)
Known as the Grands Teints or “Great Dyes,” this historic group of plants—including madder, indigo, and weld—formed the foundation of natural dyeing traditions across cultures. We also grow a collection of annual and biannual flowers for colour such as Black Hollyhock, African Marigolds, Hopi Sunflowers and many more.

-
Madder
Madder is one of the oldest known dye plants, prized for its vibrant reds and earthy pinks, extracted from its deep-growing roots.
-
Indigo
Indigo is a legendary dye plant that produces rich, deep blues through a unique fermentation process, without the need for mordants.
-
Weld
Weld is Europe’s oldest source of yellow dye, offering clear, bright golds that are incredibly lightfast and pair beautifully with indigo for greens.
